Why Chimney Sweep & Cleaning Matters
Every fire leaves creosote behind — a tar-like residue that coats the inside of the flue. Stage one wipes off easily; stage three hardens into a glazed layer that burns at over 2,000°F if it ignites. Chimney fires are fast, loud and expensive, and nearly all of them are preventable with an annual sweep.
A Captain Chimney Repair sweep is not just brushing. We seal the fireplace opening, run a HEPA-filtered negative-air vacuum the entire time, brush the flue from the appropriate end, then clear the smoke chamber, shelf and firebox. You should not be able to tell we were in your living room.
When to Schedule a Sweep
Once Every Burning Season
The NFPA recommends an annual inspection and cleaning as needed. If you burn regularly, once a year before the cold arrives is the right rhythm.
Smoke Rolling Into the Room
A flue restricted by creosote, debris or a nest cannot draft properly, and the smoke comes back at you instead of going up.
Strong Campfire Smell
A sharp smoky odor in warm, humid weather usually means heavy creosote buildup absorbing moisture in the flue.
Black, Flaky Buildup
If you can see a thick dark coating on the damper or inside the firebox, the flue above it looks worse.
Animals or Nesting
Birds, squirrels and raccoons block flues fast. Scratching or chirping sounds mean a sweep and a cap are both needed.
After Buying a Home
You have no idea how the last owner burned. A sweep and Level 2 inspection before the first fire is cheap insurance.

Smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper and firebox are cleaned out — the spots most often skipped.
4. Safety Check & Report
We check the flue, damper and visible masonry and tell you honestly whether anything needs attention.

How often should a chimney be swept?
Once a year for regular burners, and any time creosote reaches about 1/8 inch. Gas fireplaces still need an annual inspection even though they produce far less residue.
How long does a chimney sweep take?
A standard single-flue sweep runs about 45 to 90 minutes, longer if there is heavy glazed creosote or an animal nest to clear.
Will it make a mess in my house?
No. We seal the opening and run a HEPA negative-air vacuum for the whole job, with drop cloths on the floor and hearth.
What does a chimney sweep cost?
Our flat rate is $99 for a standard single-flue sweep. You will know the price before we arrive.
Do gas fireplaces need sweeping?
They need an annual inspection more than a sweep. Gas systems still develop blockages, corroded liners and venting problems that only show up on inspection.
