Why Chimney Inspection Matters
Most chimney problems are invisible from the ground. Cracked flue tiles, a failing liner, a gap in the smoke chamber, a separated crown — none of it shows until someone with a camera and a ladder goes looking. That is what an inspection is for: replacing a guess with photographs.
We follow the NFPA 211 inspection levels. Level 1 is the annual readiness check for a system that has not changed. Level 2 adds a video scan of the flue interior and is what you want before buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire or storm, or before any significant repair.

A Level 2 inspection documents the real condition of the system — the single most common reason chimney costs blow up a closing.
Before the Burning Season
An annual pre-season check confirms the flue is clear, the damper works and nothing has moved since last winter.
After a Chimney Fire
Even a small flue fire cracks tile and warps liners. The damage is often invisible without a camera scan.
After Storm or Earthquake
High winds, hail and ground movement shift masonry and flashing. An inspection finds it before the next rainfall does.
Changing Appliances
Swapping to a gas insert or wood stove changes venting requirements. The flue has to be sized and lined correctly for the new appliance.

The Inspection Process
1. Exterior Assessment
Crown, cap, flashing, masonry, mortar joints and the stack's alignment are checked and photographed from the roof.
2. Interior Assessment
Firebox, damper, smoke chamber, hearth and clearances to combustibles are examined from inside.
3. Flue Evaluation
On a Level 2, a video camera runs the full flue to reveal cracked tiles, gaps, blockages and liner damage.
4. Written Report
You get a plain-language report with photos, a safety verdict and clear priorities — what is urgent, what can wait.

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is a visual check of all readily accessible parts of the system. Level 2 adds a video scan of the flue interior and accessible attic, crawlspace and roof areas — required for home sales, appliance changes and after a chimney fire.
How much does a chimney inspection cost?
$59 for a standard inspection and $79 for a full Level 2 with camera scan. Both include a written report with photos.
How long does an inspection take?
A Level 1 usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. A Level 2 with the camera scan typically runs 60 to 90 minutes.
Do I need an inspection if I never use my fireplace?
Yes, at least periodically. Unused chimneys still take on water, lose mortar and attract animals — and an unlined or deteriorated flue can vent a furnace or water heater unsafely.
Will you pressure me into repairs?
No. You get photos and a plain-language report. If the chimney is fine, we say so — that answer is worth the inspection fee on its own.
