Snow load, ice, wind off the lake and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a year destroy the thin galvanized caps sold at hardware stores, usually within a few seasons. Yes. An open flue lets in rain, snow, animals and debris. Water is the single biggest cause of chimney damage, and a cap is the cheapest protection the chimney has — far less expensive than repairing a water-damaged liner or rusted damper later.
A cap covers the flue opening itself. A chase cover is the metal top on a factory-built (prefab) chimney chase. Many homes need both — we check which type of chimney you have and fit the right parts.
Yes, when it has proper mesh screening and is anchored correctly. The screen blocks squirrels, birds and raccoons while letting smoke and exhaust out. If animals are already inside, we remove the nest and blockage first.
Stainless steel and powder-coated caps typically last decades. Thin galvanized hardware-store caps can rust through in a few years, which is why we do not install them.
