Local Expertise

Why St. Louis Chimneys Need a Different Approach

St. Louis is a brick city, and that is exactly why its chimneys need more attention than most. Nearly every neighborhood south and west of downtown was built with locally fired red brick and soft lime mortar, and a chimney built that way in 1910 has spent a century absorbing rain, freezing solid in January and baking through humid 100-degree Julys. The result is the classic St. Louis failure pattern: washed-out mortar joints, spalling brick faces near the top of the stack and a crown that has broken apart along the flue.

Captain Chimney Repair works on these chimneys the way they were built. We tuckpoint with a soft, lime-rich mortar matched to the original joint color and profile instead of a hard modern mix that would crack the brick around it, and we rebuild crowns sloped with a real drip edge so water is thrown clear of the masonry. Whether it is a two-family flat in Dutchtown, a bungalow in South City or a newer home in Chesterfield or O'Fallon, the first step is the same: look at the whole stack, photograph what is actually wrong and put a written price on it.

What Makes St. Louis Chimneys Fail

Freeze-Thaw on Soft Historic Brick

St. Louis winters swing repeatedly across freezing. Water already soaked into century-old brick expands as ice and pops the face off, turning a cosmetic problem into a structural one within a few seasons.

Washed-Out Lime Mortar Joints

Original soft mortar erodes faster than the brick around it. Once joints are recessed a quarter inch, water runs straight into the core of the chimney — this is what tuckpointing exists to stop.

Humid Summers and Trapped Moisture

High humidity keeps masonry damp long after rain stops, feeding efflorescence, white staining and musty firebox odors that homeowners often mistake for a roof leak.

Storm and Wind Damage

Spring storm lines across Missouri and the Metro East tear off rain caps, dent chase covers and lift flashing. The leak usually shows up months later as a ceiling stain.

Unlined Century-Old Flues

Many pre-war city chimneys have cracked clay tile or no liner at all. A stainless liner is usually required before a fireplace or furnace can be safely reconnected.

Shared Flues in Two- and Four-Family Flats

St. Louis flats often vent multiple appliances through one aging stack. Draft problems and smoke crossing between units need a proper camera inspection, not a guess.

Our 90-year-old brick chimney was crumbling. The tuckpointing work is beautiful — it looks brand new but still matches the house perfectly. True craftsmen.

Look at the mortar joints from the ground with binoculars. If joints are recessed, crumbling or you can scrape mortar out with a key, water is already getting into the chimney. Loose brick, white staining or pieces of mortar in the gutters are the same signal.

That is the goal. Historic city brick is soft, so we use a lime-rich mix with a similar strength and color, and match the joint profile. A hard Portland-heavy mortar looks wrong and will crack the surrounding brick over the next few winters.

Spring through fall, when temperatures stay above freezing long enough for mortar and crown material to cure. Sweeps and inspections can be done year-round, and we can apply a temporary seal in winter if something is actively leaking.

Usually the chimney's own components: flashing, crown, cap or chase cover. Missouri storm lines damage all of them. We inspect the stack, photograph the actual entry point and tell you honestly if the problem sits with your roofer instead.

We serve St. Louis city and county plus Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Clayton, Chesterfield, Ballwin, Florissant, St. Charles and O'Fallon. Call (682) 217-3577 to confirm availability for your address.
