Yes. An open flue lets in rain, snow, animals and debris. Water is the single biggest cause of chimney damage, and a cap is the cheapest protection the chimney has — far less expensive than repairing a water-damaged liner or rusted damper later.
A cap covers the flue opening itself. A chase cover is the metal top on a factory-built (prefab) chimney chase. Many homes need both — we check which type of chimney you have and fit the right parts.
Yes, when it has proper mesh screening and is anchored correctly. The screen blocks squirrels, birds and raccoons while letting smoke and exhaust out. If animals are already inside, we remove the nest and blockage first.
Stainless steel and powder-coated caps typically last decades. Thin galvanized hardware-store caps can rust through in a few years, which is why we do not install them.

Stainless steel. Galvanized caps corrode quickly on the Gulf Coast and end up costing more once rust lets water into the flue. For prefab chimneys we recommend a full stainless chase cover rather than patching the original.
Usually a big part of it. Rain entering an open flue soaks debris inside the chimney and that smell comes into the room. We pair the cap with a sweep and check the damper and crown at the same visit.
