In a long heating season a firebox can be lit several nights a week for months, and that constant heating and cooling is what cracks refractory panels, warps dampers and loosens firebrick joints. It depends on the unit and the failed component. A pilot or thermocouple repair is a very different job from refractory panel replacement or firebox masonry work. We diagnose the fireplace and give a written estimate before repair work begins.
Annually, before the heating season. Gas units need the ignition assembly, burner, gaskets and venting checked; wood-burning fireplaces need the firebox, damper and flue inspected and the flue swept when deposits require it.
Smoke rollback and odors usually come from draft problems, a partially closed or damaged damper, blockage in the flue, or creosote and debris buildup. We check the firebox, damper and flue together rather than treating the symptom.
